WEEKEND RECAP: MEMORABLE DUELS TAKE OVER CHILE AND SEOULa year ago

Two continents and two different tournaments shook up the BJJ Community last weekend. In South America, the AJP Tour Chile National Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 took over the Gimnasio de la Confederación Deportiva de Magallanes, in the city of Punta Arenas, and brought about some incredible displays of technique with and without the gi throughout April 8th and 9th. Across the world, more specifically in Asia, the AJP Tour Seoul International Championship 2023 reached the Ansan Olympic Memorial Hall on April 9th, offering competitors of all ages and graduations a chance to test their skills.

SANTIAGO LOPEZ TAKES THE GOLD AT THE CHILE NATIONAL 2023

In a four-man bracket, Argentine black belt Santiago fought without the gi to take home the 94kg division gold.

In his first match, Santiago was not faring well against local Francisco Maldonado, with the latter scoring 3-0. Santiago, however, did not give up and landed a submission that put him in the final, where he faced and defeated Venezuelan Alejandro Villaparedes via the referees’ decision.

YUICHUL NAM AND DAVE KIM TRIUMPH ON THE PROFESSIONAL BLACK BELT IN SEOUL

In the Seoul International 2023, the professional black belt category saw two champions from two different countries.

In a battle of Korean locals, the men’s gi 85kg division was fought over in a single well-balanced match between Yuichul Nam and Sungbaek Lee. With three points and two penalties for each, Yuichul scored last and placed himself at the top of the podium.

Meanwhile, in the men’s gi 94kg division, American Dave Kim made full use of the score to overcome both of his Korean opponents. First, he landed 7-0 against Jung Hyun Seok to reach the final. In the gold round, Dave once again showed his prowess and scored 10-0 over Sungmin Chu to end the round-robin and become the champion.
