WEEKEND RECAP: AJP BRINGS COMPETITIONS TO THE US, CHINA, AND URUGUAYa year ago

In another action-packed weekend, AJP joined hands with three countries in different parts of the world to bring their stellar competitions. Regardless of background, graduation, or age, athletes were welcomed to test their skills in the tournaments of their choosing, with all events taking place on Saturday, August 19th. Check out below for the highlights of each championship!

AJP Tour Chongqing International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023: Valter Lima and Reid Reale take the absolute titles in China

After an entire day of matches in the Chongqing Yubei Public Sports Center Martial Art Stadium, the open weight divisions took the stage and completely stole the show in the final hours of the event. On the lighter side, the Brazilian brown belt Valter Lima (Irmandade Jiu Jitsu Carlos Lima) entered the division and quickly rose through the bracket while facing local athletes. In the gold round, Valter went up against Nueraihmait Tuerdi (Fengxi) in a balanced match, which ended in favor of the Brazilian by a 2-0 score.

Another stranger in a strange land, the Australian Reid Reale (Bushido China) rose to the brown/black open heavyweight division and showcased his prowess as he took the top spot of the podium. The title match was fought against the local Fei Liu (Checkmat International), with Reid completely dominating the bout and ending the scoreboard at 11-0 to take the absolute gold.

AJP Tour Charleston International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023: Lionel Bareiro takes the double gold in the US

In the last US-based tournament before the long-awaited ADGS Miami, AJP set up its mats in The City of North Charleston Athletic Center and welcomed all athletes to show their skills. All the better for Lionel Bareiro (Gracie Barra Asuncion Paraguay), a Paraguayan black belt that stepped up to the mats and took not one, but two gold medals.

First, in the gi, Lionel went toe-to-toe with the local Andrew Wooten (Gracie Barra Charleston) for the title. The match was balanced, but Lionel came out on top with a 2-1 score. Later that day, Lionel took off his gi and went back into the fray, this time facing the Mexican Ricardo Rea (Alliance) in another tough fight. At the end of it all, the scoreboard settled at 2-2, with Lionel having scored last to rise to the top of the podium once again.

AJP Tour Uruguay National Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023: Santiago Acosta keeps the double gold in Uruguay

With many athletes headed to the Campus de Maldonado, the tournament was highlighted by the journey of Santiago Acosta (Academia Mario Sukata), an Uruguayan black belt who put his know-how to the test and conquered the double gold. His first stop was the 69kg division, where he fought in a one-match bracket against Guillermo Freire (Ratao Jiu Jitsu Internacional), taking the title via submission. Then, in the open lightweight division, Santiago once again stepped into the mats to face guillermo, taking the victory and his second gold medal by a 8-0 score.

Another highlight goes to the Brazilian black belt Gabriela Pereira (Vision BJJ), who submitted everyone in a round-robin to take the 70kg brown/black division gold.
