AJP US NATIONAL: WOMEN'S DIVISION SHINES WITH GREAT MATCHES IN ATLANTAa year ago

Making way for the ADGS Miami, which is scheduled for September, the AJP held another event with its international seal in the USA, specifically at the Georgia Convention Center, in Atlanta. The AJP Tour US National Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 took place last Saturday, July 15th, and showed the whole world how Jiu-Jitsu evolved in the country throughout the years.

Among the highlights, we had intense duels in the Professional category, with the Men’s black and Women’s brown/black divisions adding another layer of heat to the boiling pot that was the tournament. WOMEN’S GI / BROWN / BLACK / PROFESSIONAL

62kg: Randryely Souza vs. Leilani Bernales

Randryely seized the initiative in the duel by using an omoplata lock to go up. Leilani managed to keep up with the spin, defending well from both the climb and the back take. Leilani tried to turn the tables by going up with a grip on the pants, but only scored one point. With a 2-1 score, Randryely took the win and the gold medal.

70kg: Debora Alves vs. Devin Topping

Devin started by pulling guard and Debora took the opportunity to work on top, jabbing her knee in half guard. With a deft move, Debora used her hips to reach the mount position, but with her leg still stuck in the half guard. Devin managed to avoid taking that four-point hit, but Debora still earned one point for the guard pass attempt, taking the win by 1-0 in the final score.

95kg: Brenda Palheta vs. Jennifer Case

In a classic duel between guard player and guard passer, Brenda used her skills from the bottom to pull the brakes on Jennifer Case’s momentum. The American tried to advance against the legs of the Brazilian, but the latter took the lead after Jennifer received a penalty for an illegal grip on the pants, putting the scoreboard at 1-0 and sealing the deal on Brenda’s victory.

69kg: Sebastian Serpa vs. An Vu

In an intense duel, with good opportunities for both sides, Sebastian and An Vu delivered quite a battle for the fans. Taking a more offensive approach, Sebastian went all out with his guard, almost sweeping a couple of times and then going up without the sweep, scoring one point. With the scoreboard at 1-0, Sebastian took the win.

85kg: Heitor Senra vs. Adolfo Suarez

Heitor kicked off the scoreboard by pulling straight to the sweep, taking Adolfo down before going up with a 2-0. Adolfo responded with his own sweep but didn’t stabilize on top and went back to the guard, landing only one point. With a 2-1 on the scoreboard, Heitor maintained control from above, avoided a takedown, pulled guard, and ultimately won the bout by points.
