GRAN CANARIA INTERNATIONAL: ELLIS YOUNGER TAKES DOUBLE GOLD AT THE PROFESSIONAL BLACK BELTa year ago

On this saturday, March 25th, high-octane BJJ action mixed with breathtaking vistas at the AJP Tour Gran Canaria International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023. In the four fight areas set up at the Polideportivo Leoncio Castellano Arencibia, athletes of all graduations fought with and without the gi to show their prowess and reach the highest spot on the podium.

Representing the East Coast Jiu Jitsu Academy, the British black belt Ellis Younger was the highlight of the event. In the 77kg bracket, Ellis submitted the Irish Ben Judge (Team Felipe Martins) in the semifinal and the Colombian Rogelio Andres (Carlson Gracie Canarias) in the final to take his first gold medal. Still hungry for more, the 27-year-old then returned to the mats without the gi and landed yet another submission, this time against the local David Squaglia (Atrixion MMA). Double gold and a memorable campaign that landed Ellis at the third place in the AJP UK ranking.

Other highlights were the Spanish black belt Francisco Ramon, who took the 85kg gold on the referee’s decision; the Welsh black belt Bryn Jenkins, who landed a winning submission to take the master 1 85kg title; and the Brazilian black belt Paulo Monteiro, who made full use of the score to reach the top of the podium on the Master 2 62kg division.
