WEEKEND RECAP: AUSTRIA AND UKRAINE BRING THE HEAT WITH STELLAR COMPETITIONSa year ago

This Saturday, April 1st, AJP had its sights set in two European countries. On one side, the Bluebox Arenz housed the AJP Tour Austria National Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023, which welcomed athletes from all ages and graduations to fight with and without the gi. On the other side, the AJP Tour Ukraine National Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 took over the National University of Physical Education and Sport,giving the colored belts a chance to reach the spotlight and accumulate the experience they’ll need to reach the next level.

SLOVENIA, DENMARK, AND BRAZIL REACH THE AUSTRIA NATIONAL BLACK BELT PODIUM

In an inspiring display of globalization within the sport, the professional black belt titles were all snagged by athletes of different nationalities. In the men’s gi 85kg, Slovenian Nejc Hodnik submitted Swedish Emil Jansson in a round robin to reach the final round, which saw him scoring 5-4 against Belgian Florian Bayili to take the gold.

Afterwards, in the men’s 120kg, Brazilian Marcos Carrozzino quickly scored seven points on Bosnian Alen Ramic before landing the winning submission. Finally, at the men’s no-gi 94kg, Dane Kasper Lansen saw himself evenly matched by the local Antonio Stanic in a match that took over the regulated time and was decided in favor of the former by the referees.

UKRAINE NATIONAL: ARTEM VEKLYCH SUBMITS ALL OPPONENTS ON HIS WAY TO THE GOLD

In the AJP Tour Ukraine National Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023, the professional purple belt Artem Veklych was on a roll.

In the men’s gi 77kg bracket, which had only Ukrainian athletes, Artem had two challenges to overcome. First, he faced fellow Checkmat teammate Rosislav Ponomarenko in a balanced match that ended in a submission. Then, in the final round, Artem saw his game flourish against Denys Patkivskyi (Zr Team Association), landing 6 points before submitting yet again to take the gold and the top spot in the AJP Ukrainian ranking.
