WEEKEND RECAP: COMPETITORS FIGHT FOR GLORY IN CANADA, MONGOLIA AND CROATIAa year ago

Another weekend has come and gone, bringing a fresh batch of AJP competitions for the ever-hungry athletes that fight for a higher position in their respective ranking. With all three tournaments happening in different corners of the world, check out below the highlights of each championship!

MARCOS CARROZZINO AND NIKODEM JANIK SUBMIT THEIR WAY TO THE TOP IN THE CROATIA NATIONAL

This Saturday, May 13th, the AJP Tour Croatia National Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 took over the Dom Sportova, in the capital city of Zagreb. With all ages and graduations being welcomed at the tournament, the arena promptly became a warzone as each competitor sought to prove themselves and their training on one of the five fight areas of the event.

Amid the many battles fought, two black belts stood as the highlights of the Croatia National. First, in the Men’s Gi 94kg division, Marcos Carrozzino (GFTeam) submitted the local Ivan Matesic (Checkmat International) to take the gold. Then, in the Men’s No-Gi 85kg final round, the Emirati Sultan Alowais (Sharjah Self-Defence Sports Club) landed a winning submission against the Polish Nikodem Janik (Checkmat International).

FATIMA, MATTHEW, AND NIKOLAOS TAKE THE GOLD AT THE REGINA INTERNATIONAL

Still on Saturday, Canadian colored belts headed to the Archbishop M.C. O’Neill Catholic High School and fought for recognition and experience at the AJP Tour Regina International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023.

Two professionals and one master were the highlights of the event. In a battle of locals, the Women’s Gi 70kg gold was fought over by Fatima Eltassi (GFTeam) and Jane Bryson (Infight Canada), with the former taking the win by a 6-2 score. Then, in the Men’s Gi 77kg, brown belt Matthew Isaacs (Gracie Humaita Woodbridge) submitted fellow Canadian Ryan Sandberg (GFTeam) to reach the top of the podium. Finally, in the Men’s Gi Master 2 85kg division, the Greek brown belt Nikolaos Lagodontis (Infight Canada) scored 11- 4 against Canadian Craig Wicks (North Wake Martial Arts) to take the gold.

MONGOLIAN BLACK BELTS SHOW THEIR PROWESS AT THE DORNOGOBI REGIONAL

Taking place on both days of the weekend, the AJP Tour Dornogobi Regional Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 brought the federation’s emblematic action to Mongolia. With three fight areas set up across the Dornogobi Sport Palace, in the city of Sainshand, local athletes tested their skills against each other and showcased the results of their training.

In the Men’s Gi 77kg division, Batbayar Batsukh (Garuda) took the gold after landing a submission against Davaadorj Munkhtur (Ikh Shavi Dojo). Then, Erdenebaatar Ulziitogtokh (Ralph Gracie Mongolia) scored 6-0 before ultimately submitting Ariuntsog Baasandorj (Elf Sport Academy) to become the 94kg division champion.

Finally, in the Women’s Gi Brown/Black 95kg division, Khulan Batbaatar (Thunder BJJ Academy) put the scoreboard at 3-0 to defeat Mongoljin Ganbaatar (Garuda) and take the top spot on the podium.
